The Lost National Anthem Verses

|
Every year this time, amid grilled foods and sparkling projectiles, someone you know will still be patriotic enough to sing the National Anthem. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is difficult to sing and God bless the singer who makes it through, but would it surprise you to know that there are three more verses?

Here's a YouTube video showing a former Marine singing the National Anthem's final verse:

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust;"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Let's not let these pieces of our history disappear.

Happy Thanksgiving

|

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving today. Betwixt the turkey and football and napping, please remember to thank our Father above who has blessed each of us with so much more than we deserve.

At Thanksgiving, I often think of a hymn I first heard while watching Little Women. You might remember it from the scene where Meg gets married.

For the beauty of the earth
For the Glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies:

Refrain:
'Lord of all, to Thee we raise
this our joyful hymn of grateful praise.
For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale and tree and flow'r
Sun and Moon and stars of light

Refrain

For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child.
Friends on earth and friends above
For all gentle thoughts and mild.

Refrain

For each perfect gift of Thine
To our race so freely given.
Graces human and divine
Flow'rs of earth and buds of heav'n.

Refrain

Let us all, this day and every day, raise a joyful hymn of grateful praise to the Creator. For every good and perfect gift comes from above.

The Revolution Will Be Twittered

|

I spent yesterday out of the news loop helping H build a computer desk from scratch. I was thus very surprised last night, as I was relaxing on Twitter, to discover that Iranians were revolting against an obviously stolen election. A bigger shock to me was the lack of news coverage the rioting was receiving from our news channels. In fact, the only place I could get news was on Twitter under the topic #IranElection. Iranians were using camera phones to film the revolts, uploading the footage to Youtube, and tweeting updates. Some were taking photos and linking them to Twitter via Twitpic. Eventually, it was tweeted that the Iranian government was shutting down cell phone coverage and internet connections there to prevent this relaying of information. Through Twitter and Youtube, I was also able to find out that the BBC appeared to be the only news organization not lying down on the job.

This is just another instance lately of the Mainstream Media sleeping while the world gathers its own raw news.

Star Trek 90210

|

If you are not familiar with the 90s teen soap, 90210, this will make no sense. I'm not that lucky and therefore laughed like crazy.

Warning: a girl takes her shirt off in the new Star Trek trailer. This is a remix of that trailer and the mixer obviously enjoyed that scene. A lot.

Can You Guess What I Was Doing Last Night?

|

Watching the RNC online with D. I used the Live Stream from FoxNews - no pesky, noisy reporters and "experts".

D really liked Fred Thompson's speech - and so did I. Here's the video, compliments of C-SPAN. I found it by clicking on the ad on my sidebar (hint, hint).

Anyone else watching the RNC?

Christian the Lion

|

This video has gone viral, so most of ya'll have probably already viewed it. H just showed it to me this week and I thought it was adorable, though I was sure the ending would be a bloody one.

You can read more about Christian the lion at Wikipedia, at the Daily Mail ("Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room"), and the recent Today show article and video.

The old, shirtless guy in the video here is George Adamson, the famous Kenyan conservationist of the book and movie Born Free, about an orphaned lioness Adamson and his wife raised and then reintroduced into the wild.

"Why I Am a Conservative Republican"

|

This video was over at Hot Air and I just had to post it. This guy has my political beliefs down in a nutshell. My favorite part?

"America is not better than everybody else, America IS everybody else"

I've always known that America is the greatest nation on Earth. I believe America is so great because she is an amalgamation of determined people from many lands, people willing to work hard and make sacrifices in their quest to create a good life for themselves and their descendents. For over two hundred years, America has been a destination full of struggles, but also full of hope. She has endured many sorrows, but has relished in many triumphs.

America is not always right and often she stumbles. Though she bears the scars of her past sins, she continually strives towards liberty and freedom and honor for all mankind.

Some people say America was once great, as though she were a tarnished star. Some people condemn her as a sullied lady. Some people abhor her as a malevolent hag full of hate and devoid of promise. I say America is great and I think it is a steadfast and patriotic love and a firm belief in America's continuing greatness that separates Conservatives from Liberals, Republicans from Democrats.
