Thrift Store Somber

|

The memorial service for H's grandmother was yesterday and I needed some mourning clothes for D, who had nothing appropriate. Thankfully, I managed to pull together a few thrifty pieces we had:

Daughter in black and gray

  • Talbots charcoal gray lined wool skirt - thrift store, about $5
  • Joneswear silk shirt - Bealls Outlet, about $5
  • Black leather boots - Bealls Outlet, about $8
  • Black vintage scarf - my mother-in-law, free
  • White seed pearl necklace - mine
  • Pearl earrings - hers
  • (not shown) Black wool coat - my mother-in-law, free

D is probably the only fourteen-year-old who goes to a memorial service and gets a million compliments from the fellow mourners. Those who know her best were completely amazed to spy her in earrings AND a necklace.

In other news, the memorial service was short, respectful, and a good opportunity for those who loved H's grandmother to celebrate her life. All things considered, I think it went as well as possible.

More Freezer Paper Stencils

|
We picked up some dirt-cheap new t-shirts (with the retail tags still attached) for the boy recently at Goodwill and I promised him freezer paper stencils to liven up the plainness. He chose the designs. Here are the first three:

Clover T-shirt

Green on green four-leaf clover. This is his new "lucky" shirt.  Yes, his eyes are closed. July in Florida is just so bright. In fact, the sunlight makes the clover seem muted; it's not. The image was an online coloring sheet.

Celtic Cross T-shirt

Blue on brown Celtic cross. I really like this one. The image was an online coloring sheet with a lot of ornate detail, but I kept the image simple and masculine.

I Like Ike T-shirt

Red and blue on gray I Like Ike. I think this is everyone's favorite. I copied and pasted an image of an "I Like Ike" campaign button into Microsoft Word, enlarged the image, and printed it in gray scale. This is my first two-color freezer paper stencil.

The t-shirts were a dollar a piece and the images were free. I already had the fabric paint, so these were very inexpensive.

Freezer Paper Stenciled Surcoats

|

I promised to freezer paper stencil the children's surcoats and finally got a chance yesterday.

D chose to side with Rohan and wanted a horse.

S sided with Gondor and wanted a tree.

A Matinee Swing Jacket - Sort Of

|

Daughter would like a little jacket to wear with sundresses. She liked this Matinee Swing Jacket crochet pattern from Lion Brand Yarn, but she wants me to leave off the collar and shorten the length and the sleeves. Other than that, though, she wants it just the same.

I'm thinking a sand-colored cotton yarn.

Dress Code Violation

|

Don't wear an American flag t-shirt to high school in Dos Palos, California; it could be a dress code violation. You might have to wear a "bright yellow T-shirt that read 'DCV: Dress Code Violator'" for the rest of the day. Poor S would not do well in such a situation. Most of his shirts are camouflage or have American flags. Plus, he'd never put on a tacky replacement shirt. He'd have a lawyer on speed dial on a cami-skinned cell phone. Chalk this up as another reason I homeschool; I don't want insane and/or asinine people in authority over my children.

Fits Me to a Tee

I rarely wear a t-shirt, but I would love to have this one. Do you think I'd incite a riot at the YMCA gym?

Reconstructed sweater

Neighbor Boy's old Pokemon sweater gets a new life as a girly play sweater for D thanks to a scrap of flannel appliqued over the Pokemon characters.
