Calorie-free Pi

Archimedes and Pi

Am I the only person who not only crochets an anthropomorphic Pi, but also heads out (while sick) on a cold and blustery day with a text of Euclidean geometry for a photo shoot?

Euclid and Pi

Just checking.

This is the Pi pattern I previously posted about. I probably would not have made it save for the fact that D has been Pi crazy lately. She's currently memorizing it for fun. Right now she's up to fifteen decimal places: 3.141592653589793.

To aid her in her interest, I've also been mining the internet for Pi links and have many saved at my Delicious. You might find these helpful if you too know a Pi lover.

Crochet a Pi

|
I didn't get a chance to mention Pi Day on 3/14, but I belatedly came across a post from Create! where she tells how to crochet your own Pi and had to link it. This is a cute project if you have a math geek in the house.

Happy Square Root Day!

|

...yesterday.

Thanks to Melissa for letting me know.

Alas, I was too busy to celebrate. It was, however, a good opportunity to introduce square roots to my son.

If you missed it, don't worry, the next day is on 4-4-16.

What is the Shape of a Football?

|

A football is a prolate spheroid, a spheroid in which the polar diameter is longer than the equatorial diameter.

This is the sort of question I have to answer in our homeschool. Thank God for the internet.

Make Your Own Fraction Math Manipulatives

|

Fraction Manipulatives

Donna Young's website is wonderful and she has printable fraction manipulatives. I like that hers have the fraction, percentage, and decimal form on each pie slice.

I printed the groups of four pies on a sheet using a different color construction paper for each fraction. I then covered the sheets with Contact paper and cut them out. One pie, out each group of four, I left whole. The other pies were cut into slices. A reused Chinese food container stores them all.
