The nearby, affluent subdivision had its semiyearly, community yard
sale Saturday. I only had one item on my shopping list: a coffee
table. We've never owned one. Coffee tables get in the way when you
have clumsy toddlers or cartwheeling little kids. The kids are older
now, though, and I decided it was time to join the rest of the coffee
table-owning world. We discovered a lovely cottage style one at the
yard sale. Solid wood, green legs, medium-toned stained top, one
good-sized drawer, and the perfect heighth-width-depth. Did I mention
solid wood? $25. So, we are now the proud owners (at last) of a coffee
table. I love it. It fits us so well and looks great. It's also very
useful. The large drawer holds a few current magazines, coasters, and
remotes. H and I paused in the living room repeatedly this weekend to
admire the table and remark on its price and contribution to the
household.
At
the same house, we also picked up a large set of wooden blocks. They're
the brick-sized ones. I've always wanted some for the kids but they are
expensive. These were $8. Good deal and the kids and H spent Sunday
afternoon building with them.
After yard saleing, we took a trip
to the local Girl Scout store to get D's handbook and uniform. This is
her first year as a Girl Scout. I tried hard to find an alternative but
had no luck in our area. So, Girl Scouting it is. D's very excited.
Right now, she's an independant, or Juliette, scout as there is a
shortage of open troops. This weekend, she attends her first scouting
event - a presentation on Berthe Morisot accompanied by a sculpture
class. This is hosted at the local museum of fine arts. Next month she
will attend an archery class. She's floating on air as she loves bows
and arrows. She's already earned her first badge and is almost done
with two more. She's also planning her service project.
On
Sunday, I reconstructed two of D's play dresses so that she could
continue to wear them. I cut the bottom off each A-line jumper and
added panels to the skirt. Then, I sewed the skirt and bodice back
together and added a ruffle at the bottom. D is very happy with her new
dresses and thinks them lovely. I'm just happy to get some more wear
out of the dresses.

Our
neighbor gave us several cans of yellow paint on Saturday and I'm
thinking of using it in the living room, dining room, and hallway. And
when I say "yellow" I mean like my dishes.
I've done a lot of painting around the house lately. I've painted the
hall bathroom cream and S's bedroom khaki sand recently. And ya'll
remember my Granny Smith apple kitchen.
This is my first experience with colored walls. We've always just had
plain white. So, the question is: can I handle yellow walls?
Lastly, my new Victoria Trading Company catalogue arrived and their Boo Garland inspired this:

Deo Gratias is a new term in our homeschooling Latin program, Prima Latina.
I thought it fitting for the Fall season, as it means "Thanks be to
God". I printed the letters on brown cardstock, cut them out in
circles, and added black cardstock cut with scrapbooking scissors on
the back. I just taped black DMC floss to the backs and hung them. The
symbol between the two words is wheat clip art. If anyone wants the
file, leave a comment and I'll add it to the site.
Edited to add: Kimberly asked so here is the Deo Gratias file: Microsoft Word or PDF. I would love to see pics of your banner if you make one.
Blessings,

think your banner is lovely. I've been looking for something to do over
my mantel for Autumn. That would be perfect. Please post the info! http://kimberlys-cup.blogspot.com/ |

a site visitor from Austin, TX Written by Guest on 2006-10-11 07:28:16 That is so neat! You could even put the letters for "Thanksgiving" on the opposite side. | Written by mrshappyhousewife on 2006-10-11 09:07:45 Kimberly, I've added the file for you. Enjoy! Donna, Oh, yes, very satisfying! And busy. As was yours. BTW, Happy Birthday! Anonymous Guest from Austin, TX, That's a great idea. I just may do that. | Michelle Written by Guest on 2006-10-13 11:01:20 My
first time to comment on your lovely blog. I would yell and emphatic
"YES!" to painting your living and dining the yellow of your dishes. I
painted my kitchen yellow (your color) two years ago. I painted my
cabinets bright red and put a black glaze over them. It is very cozy,
cottagey, italian bistro looking. I know it sounds crazy, but it did
turn out quite lovely. Lots of folks really like it. The yellow makes
everything so warm and inviting! Go for it! | Renee Written by Guest on 2006-10-23 20:02:53 I
