Happy Thanksgiving

|

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving today. Betwixt the turkey and football and napping, please remember to thank our Father above who has blessed each of us with so much more than we deserve.

At Thanksgiving, I often think of a hymn I first heard while watching Little Women. You might remember it from the scene where Meg gets married.

For the beauty of the earth
For the Glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies:

Refrain:
'Lord of all, to Thee we raise
this our joyful hymn of grateful praise.
For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale and tree and flow'r
Sun and Moon and stars of light

Refrain

For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child.
Friends on earth and friends above
For all gentle thoughts and mild.

Refrain

For each perfect gift of Thine
To our race so freely given.
Graces human and divine
Flow'rs of earth and buds of heav'n.

Refrain

Let us all, this day and every day, raise a joyful hymn of grateful praise to the Creator. For every good and perfect gift comes from above.

Neighborly

|

Since I'm still recovering from the whole brain surgery thing, my sister-in-law invited us over for Thanksgiving. My neighbors heard and surprised us by ordering Thanksgiving for us so that I won't have to leave the house. Isn't that so sweet?

My post-surgery update:

  • My stitches are out and the Dr says my incision looks great.
  • My hair, where they shaved my head, is growing like mad. The rest of my thick hair covers the area.
  • I left the house to get the stitches out and was very happy to go home again. I was really dreading going somewhere for Thanksgiving. That's why my dear neighbors bought us a cooked dinner.
  • H is back at work but D is in charge and watches me better than a Mother Hen.
  • If I bend over, it feels like my head will explode. So, I don't do that.
  • I can't really spend much time at once on the internet, but I am at Twitter.

On my Free Things page, you can find my Thanksgiving Menu - if I was able to cook.

I hope to post again before Thursday. If I don't, here's Tennessee Ernie Ford singing one of my favorite harvest hymns:

Jack-o-leen

|

Long, long ago, little D confused the words Jack-o-lantern and Halloween and called carved pumpkins "jack-o-leens".

After much begging, D got her very own pumpkin to carve for the very first time.

Die, die, Jedi dog

Stabbing the victim.

Jackolantern

The finished product.

Classic jackolantern

Lit up.

Evening

With my sunflowers.

We were careful to save all the seeds. They're delicious baked. Just wash them and spread them on tin foil. Spray them with cooking spray and sprinkle them with salt. Then, bake on low for awhile. Yummy! And so much better than sunflowers seeds, as these can be eaten shell and all. I kept some seeds out to plant next year. We'll see how that goes.

Indian Corn

|
Here is the crochet project I finished during NCIS last night:

Crocheted Indian Corn

Yes, Indian corn. This kind, though, will never die.

I attached the corn to an old metal tray...

Indian Corn

...A tray I had my husband hang above our back door.

Above my back door

Strange, maybe, but definitely interesting and fall-ish. Notice the fall leaves around the tray? The tray was a hand-me-down from H's parents. We had never really used it because of the open weave of the bottom. I think the tray works much better as wall decor - certainly better than gathering dust in a dark corner of a cabinet.

Here is the free patten for the Indian corn. The pattern is very easy, though I made my corn larger and used three yarns for the second (yellow, orange, burnt orange) and the third cobs (yellow, black, burnt orange). For the first cob, I used black with a homespun yarn made with black, blue, red, brown. The husk is off-white string.

For some other fall crochet projects, you might try this acorn, this acorn, a pine cone, some leaves, this pumpkin, this pumpkin, a corn on the cob, this squash, or this apple.

Hope y'all have some fall crochet fun, too.

Another Pumpkin

Wee Pumpkin

Are you starting to think that my house is a pumpkin patch?

This isn't a new craft. I actually sewed this pumpkin last year, but I don't think I ever got a chance to show it. The pattern was very easy. There are three sizes to choose from and this is the smallest. It fits in the palm of my hand. I don't like most pumpkin sewing patterns, but I like this one enough to possibly make another in the future. Maybe I'll try a larger size.

Deo Gratias Redux

|
Deo Gratias

In October of 2006, I made this banner:

Deo Gratias is a new term in our homeschooling Latin program, Prima Latina. I thought it fitting for the Fall season, as it means "Thanks be to God". I printed the letters on brown [really, it's light beige] cardstock, cut them out in circles, and added black cardstock cut with scrapbooking scissors on the back. I just taped black DMC floss to the backs and hung them. The symbol between the two words is wheat clip art.

Happily, Fall is here and I've hung the banner above the doorway betwixt our dining room and family room. I think it goes with the "Moroccan Spice" of the family room much better than it did on the white walls of my living room back in 2006.

If you'd like to make your own, just check on my page of "Free Things" linked on the right sidebar.

Paper Pumpkin Ornaments

|
Big and Little

I handed the kids the instructions for these cute decorations and they had some fun yesterday afternoon. They used colored printer paper for the pumpkin part instead of construction paper. These ornaments remind us of quilling. Can you guess who made which pumpkin?

Happy Fall

|
I love Fall. It's my favorite season. Apples, pumpkins, falling leaves, crisp air. Lovely.

I seem to be acquiring various kinds of faux pumpkins. They make me "squee". Here is my latest:

New Pumpkin

It's a $2 paper mache one from Michael's. H urged me to buy it since he knew I wanted it and D was sweet to paint it for me. Now, it sits on my homemade cake plate on the dining room table. I might add a bed of Fall leaves if some of the trees here can be persuaded that it is not still Summer. A short Fall is a bitter sweet aspect of our semi-tropical state.

Fall Fun

|

D and S worked so diligently this week that we had some free time yesterday. We spent it by doing two fun activities with leaves.

First, we made wax paper leaves. Can you believe they've never done this before? I remember this activity fondly - from Kindergarten. Obviously, I have neglected my duties and deprived them of this easy craft.

The children collected the leaves they wanted to use and we ironed them between sheets of wax paper. Here they are in the living room window:

Wax Paper Leaves

Next, we made a paper banner. I showed D this cute, newspaper bunting. She liked it, but also wanted to make a paper chain. We combined the two ideas to make this:

Fall Banner

(The chain ends are even; I just had to take the photo from an odd angle because my chandelier was in my way.)

Unfortunately, we didn't have paint for the newspaper as used in the Maya Made bunting, so we substituted with poster markers.

D's piece de resistance was the addition of a Planetree leaf at each corner of the banner.

It was a fun, fall afternoon. I hope we have another one like it soon.
