Joseph Mallord William Turner

JMW Turner is our artist for this term (Winter/Spring 2007).

I had never heard of Turner prior to researching him for school - quite shocking considering how famous he was during his own lifetime. And as much as I adore Impressionism, I had never heard a word about the man credited with laying that art form's foundations. Strangely enough, though, I favor Turner's earlier works rather than his later, more Impressionistic paintings. The painting above, Grand Canal, Venice, is one of those earlier works.
